“The Kroger store at 3637 S. High St. in Columbus is not closing,” a company spokesperson said. The Columbus Dispatch.

“Kroger is committed to providing fresh, affordable food to our customers and serving our neighbors.”

The grocer has 195 locations in 113 Ohio cities.

However, when rumors began circulating on Reddit about a possible closure, many worried about a possible food dessert.

A food desert can happen when there is limited access to fresh food within a community.

With the neighborhood Walmart closing in February, many thought it was a matter of time before things became dire for residents.

“Yes, it will be a gastronomic dessert. Which is not great,” one person he wrote.

“This would be a huge blow to the neighborhood and I thought Wal-Mart leaving would mean good news for Kroger,” another user wrote.

“I would like to know if there is a real estate deal in the works with this mall that will mean a renovation.”

It’s unclear how the rumor started, but Columbus residents can breathe a sigh of relief now that it’s been debunked.

KROGER LOCKS

However, not every closure is a rumor.

It was recently announced that the Kroger at Fairview Park Plaza in Decatur, Georgia will be officially demolished next week.

The store had been a staple of the square for over sixty years, according to the Herald Review.

It was the city’s main supermarket until it closed in 2018.

The store claimed it closed due to a lack of business there.

However, shoppers were so upset that they tried to create a “Save Our Store” initiative to keep the grocer in business.

Kroger ultimately chose to close, leaving the location empty for years.

Main Place Properties, the real estate company that manages the Decatur square, had difficulty filling the space.

“After Kroger vacated the 50,000-square-foot space in 2018, Main Place Properties diligently searched for a new anchor tenant to fill the void,” reads a press release obtained by the Herald-Review.

“Despite these efforts, the changing landscape and the recent addition of a new (City of Decatur) fire station on the site led to a strategic decision to repurpose the space.”

Ben Andreas, principal of Main Place Properties, said the decision to demolish the Kroger is “to support and restore Decatur.”

“By demolishing the old Kroger space and creating a clean slate, we can revitalize the area to benefit the west end of Decatur for years to come,” Andreas said.
