The police arrested the unbalanced man who launched a racial slur — and a can of beans — against a Muslim woman in an unprovoked attack at an Upper East Side subway station, cops said.
Andre Johnson, 36, of Stuyvesant Town, was arrested Thursday in Manhattan and charged with attempted third-degree assault as a hate crime and second-degree aggravated harassment, cops said.
Johnson followed the 22-year-old victim and her friend to the Lexington Ave./63rd St. F train station, jumping the turnstile around 6 p.m. Both women wore Islamic headscarves, according to the criminal complaint.
“Damn Muslims,” Johnson said as he threw the can for the victim, who identifies as Muslim.
The can hit the ceiling and exploded, splashing its contents on the woman, according to the complaint.
He then fled on an arriving train, cops said.
When arrested, Johnson was also charged with second-degree assault for pushing an elderly woman to the ground on Feb. 7 in Manhattan, according to a spokesperson for the Manhattan district attorney’s office.
The octogenarian was walking on E. 27th St. near Third Ave. around 1:50 p.m. when Johnson pushed her in the chest, sending her to the sidewalk. The woman injured her right hip and suffered severe pain, the criminal complaint said.
A Manhattan criminal court judge held him on $50,000 cash bail or $150,000 bond for the February attack, and issued a temporary order of protection for his latest victim at his arraignment Friday.
Johnson remained on Rikers Island Saturday night and is scheduled to return to court Tuesday, records show.
