A dejected Rory McIlroy was filmed leaving the US Open without congratulating rival Bryson DeChambeau after the American denied him a fifth major victory.

After a strong start at Pinehurst No 2 in North Carolina, the Northern Irish golfer slumped spectacularly late with bogeys on three of his final four holes.

Watching from the scorer’s room, McIlroy, 35, witnessed DeChambeau make a remarkable 55-yard putt from the sand to four feet and make the putt on the 18th hole to complete a one-stroke victory.

He remains without a major victory since his 2014 success at the PGA Championship.

Chants of ‘Ror-EE!’ soon stopped

It had all started very well for McIlroy, who made four birdies in a five-hole stretch around the turn to claim a two-stroke lead walking to the 14th tee.

But the chants of “Ror-EE! Ror-EE!” He soon stood in the crowd on the 16th hole, where he made his first three putts of the week and missed.

On the 18th hole, McIlroy’s tee shot landed behind a famous wire bush. He flew close to the green and pitched beautifully to four feet, where he missed again.

DeChambeau on ‘the best photo of my life’

Meanwhile, DeChambeau managed to hit one of the toughest shots in golf.

“I still can’t believe the ups and downs,” DeChambeau, 30, said as he watched a replay on the video screen during the trophy presentation. “Probably the best shot of my life.”

McIlroy will return to action at the Travelers Championship, the last of the PGA Tour’s signature events, which runs Thursday through Sunday.

The final men’s major of the year is The Open, which will take place at Royal Troon from July 18-21, where DeChambeau will once again be among the favorites heading into the tournament.
