A burned torso, still smoking, with no head and limbs, was discovered at a holiday spot in Spain.
Police were left baffled by the grisly discovery in the countryside around Alicante.
A runner in the countryside near the city – which welcomes 3 million tourists every year – made the grim discovery.
The torso was lying on the side of a road and was still smoking, according to reports.
There was no sign of legs, arms or head.
Police have not confirmed whether the victim is male or female due to the condition of the remains.
But they believe, subject to an autopsy, that it was probably a man.
The first theory is that this could be linked to a reckoning over drugs.
The horrified runner who saw the body in the La Serreta area, in the Fontnivel area, immediately called the emergency services.
The remains were still burning when the alarm was raised on Monday morning.
Police from the Violent Crimes Group and Aerial Media Unit have been searching the scene, using a drone to try and find the rest of the body.
A suitcase was also found nearby, but no trace of the limbs or head.
The remains of the dismembered person were transferred to the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Alicante.
An autopsy will be performed today.
Forensic experts will also try to find out whether any stab, gunshot or trauma could have caused the victim’s death.
Identification will only be possible through DNA given the condition of the remains.
Detectives will also look into missing person reports to find some clues.
