A Republican US representative has said she is “truly embarrassed” after being filmed pouring water into a Democratic colleague’s bag.
Vermont state Rep. Mary Morrissey apologized to Jim Carroll for repeatedly pouring water into the tote bag she hung in a House hallway.
Carroll, who like Morrissey is from Bennington, a southwestern city of about 15,000, described how she had initially noticed her purse getting wet several times a week in January and February.

“He was relentless,” Carroll said, adding that he was pretty sure it was Morrissey, whom he accused of often mistreating him.
He set up a video camera behind a scarf on the wall opposite where her purse was hanging and captured Morrissey pouring water from a glass into her purse on April 23 and 26.

He Democratic The representative then showed the images to House Speaker Jill Krowinski, who confronted Ms. Morrissey with them.
“I am truly embarrassed by my actions,” Morrissey said of “his disrespectful behavior.”
Addressing the House on Monday, he apologized to the Democrat, as well as his colleagues and the citizens of Vermont, saying he would work toward a “resolution and restoration.”
But he has been unable to give an explanation as to why he continued to soak Mr Carroll’s bag.
In response, Carroll told the camera that he heard the sincerity in her voice, but that “for five months I went through this,” and Morrissey had a choice every time.
“It was torment,” he said.
“This is a truly disturbing situation that is at odds with our legislative practices,” Democratic Speaker Krowinski said in a statement, adding that any action that compromises “the integrity and decorum of our legislative procedures” would be investigated.
