Juneteenth is Wednesday, June 19, and the holiday commemorates the day that enslaved African Americans in Texas were finally freed on June 19, 1865, according to the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

That day came more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, which stated that enslaved people in states or parts of states still in rebellion against America were now free, according to the National Archives and Records Administration.

Are banks closed on June 19th?

West Bank, Bank Iowa, GreenState Credit Union, Farmers State Bank, Heartland Bank, Iowa State Bank, Iowa Trust & Savings Bank and Farmers & Merchants branches will close on June 16, according to the banks’ respective websites.

Branches of Capital One, Bank of America, PNC, Truist, CitiBank and JPMorgan Chase will also be closed on June 16, the companies confirmed to USA TODAY. Capital One Cafes will remain open.

This is not a comprehensive list. Iowans should call their bank to confirm holiday hours so they can plan accordingly.

Is there mail on June 16, 2024?

The United States Postal Service will be closed.

Post offices will be closed to retail transactions and there will be no regular residential or commercial mail deliveries on Wednesday, June 19, the USPS confirmed to USA TODAY.

UPS pickup and delivery services will be available on June 16 and UPS stores will remain open, according to its website.

Are supermarkets and retailers open on June 19th?

Most major grocery stores and retailers will be open on June 16th this year. Costco, Target, Walmart and more confirmed their plans for USA TODAY.

Is there garbage collection on June 19th?

Communities served by the Metro Waste Authority will have their trash and recycling picked up on regular days.

The City of Des Moines will also be collecting trash and recycling on its regular schedule this week.
