‘I can get it somewhere else,’ target shoppers say, vowing to leave stores when they see new anti-theft measure

TARGET shoppers have committed to simply leaving if they encounter a store with locked items and long queues due to ATMs closing early.

The retailer has started locking select items in some stores to help prevent theft, but many customers find it a burden.

Self-checkout opening hours have also been reduced at some Target stores, which has caused lines to get crowded to get to the register.

“Store leaders have the flexibility to set checkout times that suit their stores,” Target said in a statement. Press release in March.

UNHAPPY BUYERS

The changes caused Target customers to be extremely upset because their shopping experience was disrupted.

One woman responded to a photo of a line of about 15 people and said she would just leave if she had to wait that long to check out.

“This is the point where I leave the cart right where it is and have been in and out of Target more than a few times in the last few months,” said the shopper he said in X.

The shopper continued to complain about the long line and locked items, insisting it was ridiculous.

They added: “They do this AND they lock up the fucking deodorant and washing powder. No employees with blocked stock? Fuck them.

Leaving due to anti-theft measures has become a common action for many Target shoppers.

A customer he said“When I go into a store where everything is locked, I leave without buying anything.”

Another echoed the complaints, saying“I leave stores like this.”

“I walked into a Target in Bellevue and everything was locked except the bread. Screw that.

“Everything I need I can get somewhere else. It’s strange, because with just elevator access it’s not difficult to control inventory.

“It felt punishing.”

‘EXTREMELY UPRISED’

An employee targeted Michigan said they believe the changes to self-checkout would upset customers.

They also talked about how the change in self-checkout hours was due to theft.

“If and when we have to close morning and evening self-checkouts, we will have a lot of people extremely upset with us,” they said. Business Insider.

Target spokesperson Jim Joice also noted in December 2023 that recent store closures were due to an increase in robberies.

Latest self-checkout changes

How retailers are adjusting their self-checkout formula

Walmart shoppers were shocked when self-checkout lanes at several locations were made available only to Walmart+ members.

Other customers reported that self-checkout was closed at specific times and they were offered more cashiers.

While shoppers feared that shoplifting would fuel the updates, a Walmart spokesperson revealed that store managers are simply experimenting with ways to improve checkout performance.

One bizarre experiment included an RFID-powered self-checkout kiosk that would thwart fiercely contested receipt checks.

However, this test has been discontinued.

At Target, items are being limited in auto-checkout.

Last fall, the brand researched new express self-checkout lanes in 200 stores with 10 items or less for added convenience.

In March 2024, this policy was expanded to 2,000 stores in the US.
