A police pursuit of carjacking suspects in Milwaukee ended with police shooting into the vehicle, injuring two teenage girls, one of whom was pregnant and lost her baby.

MILWAUKEE– A police pursuit of carjacking suspects in Milwaukee ended Thursday with police shooting into the vehicle and wounding two teenage girls, one of whom was pregnant and lost her baby, Milwaukee police said.

Officers attempted to stop the stolen vehicle just before 2:30 p.m. on Interstate 43 north of Milwaukee. The chase ended when the driver entered a construction lane and the vehicle was blocked by construction and a cement truck, said Police Chief Jeffrey B. Norman.

Officers ordered the driver to stop and ordered passengers out of the vehicle, but the driver backed up twice into a marked SWAT car, once while an officer was behind him. Another officer fired shots at the vehicle, injuring an 18-year-old woman and a 17-year-old boy, Norman said.

The woman suffered serious injuries and “unfortunately, the baby did not survive,” Norman said at a news conference.

The 17-year-old has serious injuries, he said.

A total of six suspects were in the vehicle, which had been stolen, Norman said. The other four, aged between 15 and 18, were taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The officer involved is a 25-year-old man with more than four years of service. He was placed on administrative duty, which is routine for an officer involved shooting, Norman said.

The suspects were being pursued in connection with an armed robbery and carjacking and an attempted armed robbery and carjacking. A gun was found in the vehicle, Norman said.
