Donald Trump’s presidential campaign raised substantially more money than Joe Biden’s last month, new figures show.

The republican candidate received 111 million pounds in contributions during May, and tens of millions were sent after he was convicted of falsifying business records.

A New York jury found Trump guilty of covering up a payment of “hush money” to an adult film star Stormy Daniel – with a billionaire donating £39.5 million after the verdict was reached.

trump The campaign has refused to confirm how much cash he has in the bank, leading critics to suggest the embattled politician is spending too much on legal fees.

On the contrary, mr biden raised £67 million in May (about 40% less) and official records show the Democrats have £167 million available for the election battle.

Julie Chávez Rodríguez, who runs Biden’s campaign, said: “The money we continue to raise is important and is helping the campaign build an operation that invests in reaching and winning over the voters who will decide this election, a stark contrast to the Trump’s public relations stunts and photographs pretending to be a campaign.

The latest figures show how the rules of American politics are changing. While a presidential candidate would once have had to withdraw from the race after being convicted of serious crimes, Trump’s verdict sparked a surge in financial support.

Now he will likely use this money to increase advertising and try to attract voters in swing states as the November election approaches.

He once described Bitcoin as a “scam” whose value is based on air, but in a sharp 180-degree turn, he has now declared that he wants to be the “crypto president” and support the industry.
