A British woman is fighting for her life after stabbing herself in front of shocked tourists at Ibiza airport.
The 54-year-old stuck a pair of scissors she had just bought at an airport pharmacy into her neck as horrified tourists looked on.
Her condition was initially described as “serious but stable” after she was rushed to the island’s Can Misses Hospital.
But this afternoon her condition worsened and she was described as “critical” in the intensive care unit at Ibiza hospital.
The airport drama occurred yesterday morning.
The unidentified woman was treated at the scene so she could be stabilized before arriving in Can Misses shortly before midday.
She is said to have repeatedly stabbed herself in the neck near the pharmacy.
Photos from the scene showed blood all over the floor of the airport terminal, which was reportedly busy at the time.
Police who were investigating last night arrived at the scene almost immediately.
It was not immediately clear whether the woman was alone or with others at the time and what caused her to hurt herself.
It is also unknown at this time whether she was about to board a flight.
An employee at the pharmacy where she bought the scissors and started stabbing herself said: “I tried to stop her, but it was difficult because she was a big woman.”
Another witness said: “There were other people in the pharmacy at the time.
“There was blood all over the ground outside before airport staff arrived to clean it up after the woman was taken away in an ambulance.”
