During the 90-minute debate, Gershkovich’s plight was highlighted at the start of his trial in Yekaterinburg, Russia.

Gershkovich, a Wall Street Journal reporter, was arrested on March 29, 2023, during a reporting trip in Yekaterinburg.

Russian authorities claimed, without providing evidence, that he was collecting secret information for the US.

Trump declared he would fight to free Gershkovich on his first day in office.

“As soon as I win the elections, I will remove this reporter,” he declared, accusing Russian President Vladimir Putin of covering Biden for Gershkovich’s release.
