The 32-year-old man died while the other three managed to reach safety after swimming back to shore.

Two local fishermen and an off-duty firefighter tried to save her, but their attempts were unsuccessful.

The three survivors, aged between 18 and 26, received medical attention following the incident.

Another witness ran to a nearby village to get emergency equipment, including lifebuoys.

The unidentified woman was pulled from the water in a small private boat as emergency crews rushed to the scene.

After the boat reached shore, she was pronounced dead.

All four people caught in the dangerous waters were staying at the same hotel in Corralejo, on the northeast coast of Fuerteventura.

Local resident Lucas Quesada, who tried to help rescue the woman, said: “The wave arrived and swept away all four tourists who were sitting in an area we called El Muellito.”

Another bystander who offered help said: “There was nothing we could do to save her. When we reached her, she was face down in the water.”

The horror incident happened around 8 pm on Thursday night.

A spokesperson for the emergency response team said: “A 32-year-old woman died in Ajuy, in the municipality of Pajara.

“The alarm was received yesterday at 8:26 pm, with the warning indicating that several people had fallen into the sea.

“An emergency response was activated immediately. Three of those affected managed to get out of the water and the fourth, a woman, was rescued by employees of the Fuerteventura City Council Emergency Service and a private boat.

“The ambulance team confirmed that she had died when she reached dry land and attended to the other three people, aged between 18 and 26.”

Fuerteventura is a popular holiday destination with Brits.

The Ajuy sea caves are on the west coast of the island and are one of its main attractions.

Thousands of tourists visit them every year and the sea around them can get very rough.

Another tourist, aged 23, almost died in March near the caves and had to be rescued by an emergency helicopter.

She was pulled from the water after almost an hour and, despite suffering from hypothermia, survived.

Reports at the time said the young woman ignored warning signs around a specific area that had been marked off-limits due to a storm.

She was allegedly taking selfies with a 25-year-old man as 20-foot waves crashed against the shore and knocked them over.
