Route 291 reopens in Independence after road crews inspect collapsed mine

Route 291 in Independence reopened to motorists Saturday morning after a partially collapsed mine forced its closure this week.

The highway was built over a mine that developed a new crack Thursday. The road was closed as a precaution for crews to assess any damage, which Missouri Department of Transportation he said.

The stretch from Truman Road to US 24 began reopening at 8 a.m. Saturday.

“Experts have completed their assessment and inspection of the mine and have determined that the road can be reopened to traffic,” the transportation department said. in a statement on Saturday.
