Police reportedly suspected that Nyah and a friend with him at the time were involved in the robberies, as authorities described the suspects as “Asian males who brandished a black firearm and demanded and forcibly stole property from the victims,” according to Rome Sentinel.

Additionally, the suspects were described as one walking and the other riding a bicycle.

Body camera footage obtained by the outlet now shows the moments the two teenagers were stopped by police and the events that unfolded before Nyah was shot.

In the footage, one of the police officers is seen approaching the minors, informing them that they were being stopped after Nyah was seen walking and his friend was walking on the road.

The officer, identified as Bryce Patterson, informed Nyah to keep his hands out of his pockets and asked if he could search him to check for any weapons.

At first, the 13-year-old raised his hands, but is later seen running in the footage.

Patterson, accompanied by officers Patrick Husnay and Andrew Citriniti, can then be seen chasing the boy.

At one point in the blurry video, the teenager points what appears to be a gun at the three police officers.

As Patterson tackled Nyah to the ground, Husnay fired a single shot at the teen.

“Drop it! Drop it!” Husnay can be heard shouting amid the chaos.

The video shows Patterson providing medical care to Nyah while saying, “I don’t know if he shot me.”

Meanwhile, Husnay and Citrinti are heard reporting the incident and calling for backup and an ambulance.

Police have since revealed that at the time, officers believed the teen was pointing a gun at them following the foot chase, according to the Associated Press.

However, it was later discovered that Nyah was actually holding a replica Glock 17 Gen 5 pistol.

Although the replica gun appears identical to a working firearm, it is only capable of firing pellets or BBs, a police spokesperson told the Associated Press.

After being stopped, Nyah fled from police and began a foot chase.

Body camera footage shows him pointing what appears to be a gun at officers.

At that moment, a shot is heard.

Officer Patrick Husnay shot the teenager.

Husnay has worked at the Utica Police Department for six years.

Following the incident, Nyah was taken to Wynn Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

All three officers have since been placed on paid administrative leave.

Husnay is a six-year veteran of the Utica Police Department.

A 2019 performance review of his duty as a street patrol officer revealed that his superiors believed he needed to “improve his command presence while on the scene of volatile situations” as well as his investigation/problem-solving skills.

The performance evaluation attributed this need for improvement to the fact that Husnay was a new officer at the time.
