A wildfire that raged Sunday afternoon along the American River Parkway near Cal Expo in Sacramento caused the highway to be closed due to heavy smoke, authorities said.
Caltrans District 3 officials and the California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert for the Capital City Freeway near Exposition Boulevard shortly before 4:30 p.m. due to smoke from the fire, which was at least an acre in size, according to Capt. Justin Sylvia , a spokesman for the Sacramento Fire Department.
The fire, which started around 3:50 p.m., burned several feet downstream near Tribute Road and was burning in dry grass and a marshy area. Smoke from the fire was pronounced in the southbound lanes of the highway as it crosses the river.
A traffic stop was being established for the northbound lanes on Broadway, according to CHP incident logs.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, Sylvia said.
