Former Donald Trump aide Steve Bannon was applauded by supporters as he arrived at prison on Monday to begin a four-month prison sentence.

The former president’s longtime ally said he was “proud” and “has no regrets” as he formally surrendered to officials at the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury. Connecticut.

It’s been almost two years since Bannon was found guilty of contempt of Congress.

Time has passed since he filed a series of appeals against his conviction, but lost his last bid for freedom last week.

Supporters, including a controversial Republican politician. Marjorie Taylor Greene – waved signs and shouted messages of encouragement as Bannon arrived outside the low-security prison around noon.

The 70-year-old described himself as a “political prisoner” while speaking to reporters.

“I am proud to go to prison today. Not only do I have no regrets, but I am proud of what I did,” he added.

A small group of counterprotesters also shouted “lock him up” and “traitor” as Bannon was led to the prison.

Bannon, who served as Trump’s chief White House strategist in 2017, was sentenced in July 2022 for refusing to appear at a hearing on January 6 Riots at the US Capitol.

He was also found guilty of a second charge of refusing to provide documents related to his involvement in Trump’s efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss to his rival. Joe Biden.

The prison sentence could keep Bannon locked up until shortly before the united states presidential elections November 5.

Meanwhile, his lawyers are expected to continue their appeal efforts in a bid to secure his early release.

Before serving the former president in the halls of power, Bannon was a key advisor to TriumphThe 2016 presidential campaign. The couple fell out after leaving the White House, but have since resolved their differences.

Bannon also faces criminal charges in New York state court over allegations that he deceived donors who contributed money to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

In August 2020 Bannon. pleaded not guilty for money laundering, conspiracy, fraud and other charges. The trial has been postponed until at least the end of September.
