A WALMART shopper had such an unpleasant experience while at a store that she chose to drive nearly an hour to avoid going there.
The last straw was when Walmart required a receipt verification and made the buyer wait to pick up a product that was locked.

X user Sandy posted about her experience and said she will take her business to Target despite the long drive.
“Worse than being asked to show a receipt at @walmart after doing work for them: waiting for someone to unlock the merchandise we want to buy,” Sandy said in the post.
“This is bullshit!
‘I’ll have to start driving 45 miles to @target to do my shopping.
Another customer chimed in to better understand Sandy’s frustration and tried to shed a positive light on the receipt checks.
“Target also has self-checkout. At least ours does. I don’t really mind checking the receipt, etc; there’s a lot of shoplifting. Which I think has increased with self-checkout,” the other shopper replied .
Sandy clarified that she doesn’t want to shop at Walmart because receipt checks and locked items make her feel like she’s already being considered a thief.
“Yes, Target in Bloomington has self-checkout, but they don’t make you feel like a criminal. So many stupid things are locked up at Walmart now,” Sandy explained.
WALMART CHALLENGES
Walmart has also upset other customers with other self-checkout policies.
Self-checkout at Walmart sometimes doesn’t offer Apple Pay, which has become the preferred form of payment among many lately.
One Walmart shopper expressed how it ruined their shopping experience because they weren’t able to make the purchase at first.
“Now I remember why I don’t shop at Walmart.”
“I forgot they don’t have Apple Pay, so I went to my car, got my wallet and paid for my stuff.”
Another Walmart shopper is frustrated with the closure of self-checkout lanes and the lack of cashiers to check people in.
Latest self-checkout changes
Retailers are evolving their self-checkout strategy in an effort to speed checkout times and reduce theft.
Walmart shoppers were shocked when self-checkout lanes at several locations were made available only to Walmart+ members.
Other customers reported that self-checkout was closed at specific times and more cashiers were offered in its place.
While shoppers feared that shoplifting would fuel the updates, a Walmart spokesperson revealed that store managers are simply experimenting with ways to improve checkout performance.
One bizarre experiment included an RFID-powered self-checkout kiosk that would thwart fiercely contested receipt checks.
However, this test has been discontinued.
At Target, items are being limited in auto-checkout.
Last fall, the brand researched new express self-checkout lanes in 200 stores with 10 items or less for added convenience.
In March 2024, this policy was expanded to 2,000 stores in the US.
The shopper is confused about how it makes sense to close the self-checkout lanes when they are readily available.
“Walmart is trash. They even have 60% of the autoscan lanes closed. Typical Walmart business ethics,” they said.
“They had a whole section of self-examination islands in red. No one could use them and there was a line full of people ready to do self-examination.”
“I understand the closure of the service islands, but the self-checkout lines!!!”
