A long-time Target customer has expressed frustration with the store’s self-checkout system, insisting recent changes have made things worse.

The dissatisfied customer claimed he was forced to abandon four items to comply with the latest restrictions.

X user Natty Bumpercar (@nattybumpercar) said in a wire from several posts that they understand that the last few years have been “challenging” for the retailer.

They praised the initial efficiency of Target’s self-checkout upgrades, which they said added about 20 new cash registers to its store.

However, the buyer claimed that one of the self-checkout areas was always closed, leaving only one or two lanes operational.

They believe the situation only got worse when Target implemented a 10-item limit on self-checkouts.

“With a 10-item limit and only one or two lanes open, if I had more than 10 items, I would end up waiting in line for a long time,” the shopper said.

This new policy has drastically changed the convenience and enjoyment of Target’s shopping trips for Natty.

During a recent visit, the buyer encountered a common problem.

Unknowingly exceeding the 10-item limit, they were stopped by an employee while trying to use the self-checkout.

Grocery stores in the US aim to launch new technology that changes the way customers shop – meaning they can avoid self-checkout

After waiting 15 minutes in one of two stagnant checkout lines, the shopper decided to remove four items from the cart to meet the self-checkout criteria.

“I can enforce the rules. The rules are great and make society fully function,” said the buyer.

“But after about 15 minutes in one of the two motionless checkout lines, I gave up.

“I still like your store, but all of these decisions seem reactionary and poorly thought out,” the shopper continued.

Latest self-checkout changes

Retailers are evolving their self-checkout strategy in an effort to speed checkout times and reduce theft.

Walmart shoppers were shocked when self-checkout lanes at several locations were made available only to Walmart+ members.

Other customers reported that self-checkout was closed at specific times and more cashiers were offered in its place.

While shoppers feared that shoplifting would fuel the updates, a Walmart spokesperson revealed that store managers are simply experimenting with ways to improve checkout performance.

One bizarre experiment included an RFID-powered self-checkout kiosk that would thwart fiercely contested receipt checks.

However, this test has been discontinued.

At Target, items are being limited in auto-checkout.

Last fall, the brand researched new express self-checkout lanes in 200 stores with 10 items or less for added convenience.

In March 2024, this policy was expanded to 2,000 stores in the US.

Shoppers emphasized how self-checkout restrictions diminished their shopping experience.

“All of this leads me to come less often, stay less time and buy fewer things,” said the shopper.

The thread highlights growing dissatisfaction with the current state of Target’s self-checkout system.

Another shopper promised to buy from Amazon if self-checkout issues weren’t resolved at Target.

Limiting how many items you can buy at Target’s self-checkout made this customer question their business plan.
