AMAZING footage has captured the moment a green meteor lights up the night sky as it travels in a rare spectacle.
Viewers were surprised when the supernatural entity turned it into total darkness sky to a luminous green, visible in many cities in Türkiye.
Incredible images captured in Istanbul show the mysterious meteor with a long tail throw through the night sky.
Viewers couldn’t tear their eyes away as they watched in amazement at the once-in-a-lifetime display.
As the meteor travels to the other side of the sky, its tail begins to glow before eventually no longer visible.
The sky turns dark again as spectators look at each other in disbelief.
Although filming was done in Istanbul, the beautiful spectacle was visible in other Turkish cities such as Bursa, Sakarya, Kocaeli and Çorum.
Initially, there was some speculation from viewers about what it actually was.
Some spectators believed they saw a rocket and others thought it was a satellite launched towards Earth.
The Turkish Space Agency (TUA) turned to X, formerly known as Twitter, to resolve the debate and confirm the location of the meteor.
They also explained why it was such a vibrant color.
TUA said: “The colors formed when meteors enter the atmosphere; vary depending on several factors, such as the chemical composition of the meteor, its speed and the gases present in the Earth’s atmosphere.
“Different elements found in the meteor can create different colors when they burn in Earth’s atmosphere.
“For example, sodium can create a bright orange-yellow color, magnesium can create green or blue tones, and ionized calcium (Ca+) can create a purple color.
“Larger meteorides can release more energy upon entry, creating more intense colors.
“Overall, these factors cause a variety of colors to appear, making each meteoric event a unique and visually stunning natural phenomenon.”
This comes after last month’s brief scare when two asteroids zoomed past – one of them being larger than 99% of near-Earth asteroids.
The larger of the two measured around 2.1 kilometers long and was reported to have come closest to Earth at 9:14 pm BST/4:14 pm ET on June 27.
“This asteroid’s orbit around the Sun is strongly inclined, which is unusual for such a large object,” explained the European Space Agency (ESA).
What is the difference between an asteroid, meteor and comet?
- Asteroid: An asteroid is a small rocky body that orbits the Sun. Most are found in the asteroid belt (between Mars and Jupiter), but they can be found anywhere (including in a path that could impact Earth).
- Meteoroid: When two asteroids collide, the small pieces that break off are called meteoroids.
- Meteor: If a meteoroid enters Earth’s atmosphere, it begins to vaporize and then becomes a meteor. On Earth, it will look like a ray of light in the sky because the rock is burning
- Meteorite: If a meteoroid doesn’t completely vaporize and survive the trip through Earth’s atmosphere, it could land on Earth. At that point it becomes a meteorite
- Comet: Like asteroids, a comet orbits the Sun. However, instead of being made mostly of rock, a comet contains a lot of ice and gas, which can result in incredible tails forming behind them (thanks to the vaporization of the ice and dust ).
