JAY SLATER’S family are “desperate” for permission from Spanish police to use specialist equipment in their new search for the missing teenager.

Jay’s loved ones hope to use drones, radar tracking kit and night vision equipment to roam the mountains where he was last seen.

But the Slaters are waiting for the green light from Tenerife police to use the high-tech search equipment.

This latest effort in the search for Jay – who has been missing for three weeks tomorrow – could begin as early as next week, The Sun can reveal.

A source told Sun Online: “Jay’s family are aware that every second counts in the search for him.

“That’s why they are desperate to be granted permission to allow them to use the specialist equipment they have identified.

“They have been talking to experts who have suggested items that could help – things like [radar] tracking equipment, drones and kits that can also help at night.”

Jay’s last known location was in the Teno Rural park, a mountainous area in northwest Tenerife.

Police searched a huge area stretching more than 20 miles into the hills for him – and searched a 2,000-foot ravine for two weeks.

To the devastation of Jay’s family, police officers called off the search last Sunday, encouraging Jay’s father, uncle and brother to return to the mountains themselves.

The new kit, in conjunction with items such as metal detectors, could help speed up the search over an extremely vast area.

“Right now the family is awaiting authorization to use the equipment, but is desperately hoping that it will be granted and they can move forward,” said the source.

“It could be really essential in helping them find clues that lead to Jay.

“In an ideal world, the family would like the equipment to be in the hands of whoever is leading the search by next week.

It turns out that one of Tenerife’s leading search and rescue experts spoke about the hunt.

Santiago Carlos, spokesman for missing persons services SOS Desaparecidos, criticized the wild speculation about Jay that spread across social media.

He told The Sun: “Certainly something happened to that young man, but there is a lot of information between Tenerife and the UK, a lot of speculation that causes a lot of damage, not only to the family, but also to the investigation and the search itself.”

Jay’s devastated mother Debbie Duncan also spoke out against cruel trolls in an emotional appeal, criticizing those who make wild claims online.

Last week it emerged that Tenerife police told the family of the missing Lancashire teenager that they could bring in their own search and rescue teams.

The 19-year-old apprentice bricklayer from Oswaldtwistle was last heard from on June 17 after embarking on a 10-hour walk home from an Airbnb in the north.

A GoFundMe set up by the last person to speak to Jay, his friend Lucy Mae Law, had reached £50,000 by Friday evening.

The teenager’s family says they want to use part of the funds to pay specialists to help search for the teenager.

In a statement on the GoFundMe appeal, Get Jay Slater Home, Debbie thanked donors for their “vast” generosity.

She said her family is “grateful for all of your support and kindness during this unimaginable time.”
