The identity of ‘Jonny Vegas’, one of the mystery men who last saw missing British teenager Jay Slater, has been revealed.

Initial reports suggested that convicted drug dealer Ayub Qassim and Jonny Vegas were the two new friends Jay made before he disappeared – but they now appear to be one and the same.

It comes after The Sun revealed Ayub, 31, rented a £40-a-night holiday let – where Jay spent the night before disappearing – under a different surname.

Former detective Mark Williams-Thomas has since told Mail Online that Qassim has confirmed the nickname ‘Jonny Vegas’ belongs to him.

Jay, 19, went to the Airbnb – called Case Abuela Tina – in northwest Tenerife at around 5am on June 17, just hours before he disappeared.

The apprentice bricklayer, from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, spent all night at a rave in Playa de las Americas.

Qassim, who was jailed nine years ago for masterminding an operation to flood Wales with class A drugs, said: “I let the old man stay at my house because he had nowhere else to go.

“All his friends abandoned him.

“I know Jay, through friends, I’m not going to bring someone back to my house if I don’t know him.

“I’m doing the old man a favor and now my face is all over the news. It’s a little crazy. I didn’t even do anything.”

Qassim, who booked the Airbnb under the surname Abdul, and his anonymous friend spoke to Spanish police after Jay went missing before flying back to the UK the following day.

He added: “The only comment I have is that Jay got home alive and came out alive.

“If I had fought with him, would he have come to me?

“There were no problems. You saw the last images of him with his red blanket around him.

“I don’t know if he had problems elsewhere because I don’t know him very well, I only know him through friends.”

Jay’s father Warren, 58, questioned why his teenage son ended up in a remote Airbnb with “two grown men”.
