Actor Chace Crawford says a scene in which he had to simulate sex with an octopus was a complete surprise and almost caused him to have a panic attack.

The 38-year-old, who rose to fame playing Nate Archibald in Gossip Girl, has played one of the main characters in all four series of satirical superhero show The Boys on Amazon Prime.

However, he had no idea that his role as Kevin Moskowitz, aka The Deep, whose powers include breathing underwater and the ability to talk to sea animals, had such a demanding scene in store when he first took on the role in 2019.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, he said he would have thought twice about accepting the role if he had known.

Seeing it in the script for season three, episode six for the first time, Crawford said he thought, “Oh God, how is this going to work?”

He went on to admit, “I was in total denial. And then it was 24 hours from the first day I had to film it and I almost had a panic attack.”

Crawford says he called showrunner Eric Kripke, discussing how the scene would be filmed, and asked him, “How are we going to do this? What are the angles going to be? How naked do I have to be?”

He adds that in the end only one shot was changed and the filming went well.

The octopus, named Ambrosius, is voiced by Oscar-winning British actress Tilda Swinton.

While Crawford says it was a closed set (when only essential crew members are allowed on set due to filming a sensitive scene), she says the production’s privacy coordinator was not involved in the filming.

He admits: “Just picking up the octopus and putting it wet on the bed was really fun and weird.”

Crawford says the long gap between filming and airing episodes also increased her anxiety. “He hasn’t been out for almost a year. [after you’ve filmed it]and you wonder: ‘How is this going to be received?'” he explains.

However, he says that fans loved his performance and sometimes even come up to him to tell him so.

“I saw someone at the gym the other day and he said, ‘Actually, I’m going to show you this.’

“And it was him in a Deep costume and a pink octopus wrapped around him at Comic-Con or something. Everybody loved it, man. I get a little cranky, but it’s good.”
