Many customers say they add long lines and wait times to what used to be pleasant shopping trips.

One particular area of frustration for shoppers is locked shelves.

The anti-theft measure places essential items such as toothpaste, baby formula, underwear, soap and razors behind locked plexiglass doors – instead of expensive goods.

One customer shared their recent experience, tagging Target to share the changes they noticed.

“Wow, at Target, it takes about an hour to buy a pair of socks and [underwear]”, a dissatisfied buyer tweeted in X.

“They’re all locked and we had to walk from one end of the store to the other to find someone to open the damn closet. I ended up going to the service desk.

“Buying shirts and stuff was really easy @Target.”

‘WHAT IS HAPPENING?’

Many shoppers noticed walls of locked shelves at the retailer.

A customer in San Francisco posted a video showing the measures taken by his store.

‘I’m done,’ shouts target shopper after discovering cheap essentials are being held by security in attempt to combat thieves

The San Francisco area has seen crime spiral out of control, resulting in the closure of a large number of stores.

“What’s happening at our local target?” the user posted on X.

When they entered the store, they noticed that the glass panels on the revolving doors had been “broken in” – slang for broken into.

The panels were cracked in some areas and covered in others to prevent further damage.

Anti-theft measures implemented by retailers

Retailers in the US and Canada have implemented strategies designed to combat theft. The US Sun has compiled a list of measures that have been implemented in stores.

  • Lock items in cabinets.
  • Safety stakes.
  • Security cameras.
  • Signs warning about the impact of theft.
  • Receipt scanners.
  • Receipt checks.
  • Carts with locking technology

“They locked everything down,” he repeated several times as he walked the halls, including toiletries and skin care.

“Everything that isn’t locked is daisy-chained with alarms,” he described as he looked at the jeans that were locked away on racks and racks.

Walls of locked shelves crowded the store as he walked through the aisles of underwear and socks.

Items did not sit freely on the shelf without a form of security to keep them in place.

“This is not because of online shopping or the pandemic,” the shopper said.

“This is due to mass theft, the homelessness crisis, and the fentanyl genocide. This is not the America I grew up in,” they concluded.

NOT JUST TARGET

Target isn’t the only store experiencing backlash over locked shelves.

Walmart also received negative reviews and angry customers.

One shopper was so frustrated he considered buying from the retailer due to the extreme measures.

“I went to Walmart today for the first time in a long time and what’s the point of shopping if everything is locked up?” they asked in the tweet.

However, the locked shelves weren’t the only thing that irked the shopper.

“So when an associate comes in, they don’t come with the key they need?” they said.

US Sun has reached out to Target for comment.
