Shelley Duvall, best known for her role in The Shining, has died at the age of 75.

He died in his sleep from complications of diabetes at his home in Blanco, Texas, his partner told The Hollywood Reporter.

“My dear, sweet, wonderful life partner and friend left us. Too much suffering lately, now she’s free. Fly away, beautiful Shelley,” Dan Gilroy said.

Duvall began her big screen career in 1970 in Brewster McCloud, the first of seven films she made with filmmaker Robert Altman.

The star gained wide recognition in many of her films, including Nashville and 3 Women (the latter earned her the best actress award at the Cannes Film Festival) and for her portrayal of Olive Oyl in Popeye. She also starred in Woody Allen’s Annie Hall.

But it is her iconic performance as a terrified wife and mother in the 1980 horror classic The Shining that she is best known for, playing Wendy Torrance opposite Jack Nicholson in Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of Stephen King’s novel.
