COCOA BEACH, Florida – A 170-pound sea turtle was returned to the Atlantic Ocean after three months of rehabilitation in Florida.
Employees with the Brevard Zoo released a loggerhead named Bubba Wednesday afternoon in Cocoa Beach.
Biologists from Inwater Research found Bubba in St. Lucie County on April 10, authorities said. After noticing injuries to both of his front flippers, they used a crane to lift him out of the water and into a pickup truck to take him to the zoo.
A preliminary examination found that Bubba was likely injured in a predator attack. The sea turtle also faced an intense infestation of sea leeches, which caused anemia.
Biologists estimate Bubba to be between 60 and 75 years old.
