A man killed during the attempted assassination of Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania lunged at his family to try to protect them from bullets, the state’s governor said.

Corey Comperatore, who was 50, died a “hero,” Gov. Josh Shapiro told reporters.

“His wife told me that he [dived] to his family to protect them,” he added.

Two other shooting victims are still in critical condition, Shapiro said.

Comperatore lived in Sarver, Pennsylvania, authorities said.

He was an “avid supporter of the former president and was very excited to be with him in the community last night,” Shapiro said, adding, “Political disagreements can never, ever be addressed through violence.”

He has ordered flags to be flown at half-mast in honor of the victim.

Comperatore’s sister, Dawn Comperatore Schafer, said “hatred of a man” had taken the life of “the man we loved most.”

Her brother was a “hero who protected his daughters,” Comperatore Schafer said on Facebook.

“His wife and daughters experienced the unthinkable and unimaginable.

“My little brother just turned 50 and he had a lot of life left to live.

“Hate has no limits and love has no limits.”

Mr. Comperatore’s sister asked people to pray for his family.

The tragedy they are experiencing now “seems like a terrible nightmare, but we know that it is our painful reality,” he added.

Randy Reamer, president of the Buffalo Township Volunteer Fire Company, said Comperatore had served as company chief for about three years and was a “brave man” and a “true fire service brother.”

He added: “Just a great guy in every way, always willing to help someone.”

Donald Trump has said that it was “Only God is the one who prevented the unthinkable from happening”.

In a statement on his Truth Social platform, the previous president He urged Americans to remain united to “not let evil win.”
