A US citizen who allegedly left a British nurse temporarily unable to walk after a car accident has been arrested in Texas a year after the collision.

Issac Calderón must appear before a US court on Monday for possible extradition to the United Kingdom after being accused of causing Serious injury due to dangerous driving on July 31, 2023..

Elizabeth Donowho, a mental health nurse from Malvern, Worcestershire, was unable to walk for six weeks after breaking bones and suffering multiple fractures in the accident on the A4103 near Shucknall, Herefordshire, including both ankles, her sternum and her right hand.

Calderon, who was 22 years old at the time of the accident, was not immediately arrested because he required medical attention for serious injuries.

He then left the UK on a commercial flight bound for Texas on November 25, ahead of a scheduled hearing at Kidderminster Magistrates’ Court late last year.

In an email seen by Sky News on Monday, Ms Donowho was informed of Calderon’s arrest by West Mercia Police.

Donowho spokesman Radd Seiger reacted: “It has been almost a year since Elizabeth suffered the accident that nearly took her life.

“We don’t know why the extradition process has taken so long, but we are delighted to see that it is now underway and we hope that Mr Calderón will be returned to the UK shortly so he can face our justice system.

“Of course, he is innocent of the charges he faces until proven guilty.”

It is not known why Calderon was in the UK last year, but police previously told Donowho that he had been visiting the British special forces base in Herefordshire when the crash occurred.

The force said it was working on matters “that could fall under the Official Secrets Act”.

In December 2023, Sky News tracked down Calderón at his parents’ home in Humble, Texas.

His father insisted at the time that he had been in the UK on a work visa, had worked in a warehouse and that the situation had been “disproportionate”.

He said the family had been “contacted by the FBI” who were “talking about extradition.”

The case has been compared to that of Anne Sacoolas, the American spy who left the United Kingdom after killing a teenager. Harry Dunn in an accident in Northamptonshire in 2019.

Last month, Sacoolas apologized for the “tragic mistake” he made during a investigation into the death of Mr Dunn. The coroner subsequently issued three future death prevention notices in a bid to prevent similar tragedies from occurring.
