Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are providing security at this week’s Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, just days after a failed assassination attempt about former President Donald Trump.

More than 130 law enforcement agencies — including CMPD, Concord police, Greensboro police and Cary police — are sending their officers to help, according to the Milwaukee Police Department.

A group of CMPD bicycle officers will be at the convention at Milwaukee’s request, CMPD said in a statement. Spokesman Mike Allinger declined to say how many will be in attendance.

“CMPD leaders are also sharing expertise on providing security and logistics for the 2020 Republican National Convention in Charlotte,” Allinger said in an email. “CMPD requested and received assistance from other departments in 2012 when the city of Charlotte hosted the Democratic National Convention.”’

The department has helped cities during “major events in the past, including national political conventions, international summits and presidential inaugurations,” he said.

All costs of CMPD being in Milwaukee are being covered by the Republican National Committee, Allinger said. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police agreed to be there before Saturday’s shooting at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, he said.
