DURING his vice presidential acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention, JD Vance introduced his mother, who will celebrate 10 years sober in January.
Vance wrote and spoke about his mother’s drug and alcohol abuse in his popular memoir Hillbilly Elegy.
Vance’s mother, Beverly Vance, was moved to tears as people applauded his performance.
The Ohio senator was introduced by his wife Usha Chilukuri, 38, who was by his side throughout the conference.
He was greeted with applause as he began his first speech.
As he began his speech, he acknowledged that “Tonight is a night of hope. A celebration of what America once was and, with God’s grace, what it will soon be again.”
He also said that tonight “could have been a day of pain and mourning,” referring to the attempted assassination of Trump that occurred on Saturday.
Despite previous criticism of the former president, Vance praised Trump and recalled when he entered politics.
“He didn’t need politics. But the country needed him,” Vance said.
“He chose to endure abuse, harassment and persecution, and he did it because he loves this country.”
Before delving into his experience, he announced that he accepted the position.
“I officially accept your nomination for Vice President of the United States of America”, he exclaimed, shouting “JD, JD”.
He said he wanted to stand by Trump because “President Trump represents America’s last best hope.”
