In a letter dated July 6, Representative Jamie Raskin urged President Joe Biden to reconsider his re-election bid, joining dozens of other prominent Democrats who publicly called for the resignation of their supposed candidate.
In his four-page letter, first reported by The New York Times and then obtained by NBC News, Raskin does not explicitly call for Biden to step down. Instead, he warns that the country is “under siege every day by autocrats and monarchists, from Moscow to Mar-A-Lago” and that the stakes of the November elections are high.
“I am not writing to assume that I will tell you what to do, Mr. President, because that is entirely up to you, Jill and your family,” Rasking wrote, adding, “No one begrudges the choice you must make now, Mr. President.” President, but remember this as the great politician you are and always have been.”
“The difficult questions that have been raised about his physical and mental resilience… are not just medical and scientific questions now,” he added. “They are also political issues because both political leaders and tens of millions of voting citizens have formed judgments based on the events of recent weeks.”
