A man is dead after a shooting Saturday night in Kansas City.

Police responded to reports of a shooting around 7:30 p.m. east of the intersection of 9th St. and Chestnut Ave., where they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. Life-saving measures were taken at the scene, but the man was pronounced dead at a local hospital, according to Sgt. Phil DiMartino, spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department.

Police are investigating the shooting as a homicide. Several witnesses have been interviewed and detectives will continue to investigate the area, Di Martino said in a news release.

The deadly shooting was the 81st homicide recorded in Kansas City in 2024, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. There were 115 homicides reported in the city at this time last year.
