A former FedEx driver in North Carolina is accused of stealing a French bulldog that died due to suspected heat-related problems in the suspect’s scalding hot delivery truck, authorities said.
Kimani Joehon Marshall, 44, of Fayetteville, turned himself in to authorities Monday on recommended charges of theft of a dog, possession of stolen property and cruelty to animals, according to a statement from Sheriff Wayne Coats of the County Sheriff’s Office. Harnett County.
The tan and white pup was named Tori, according to court and sheriff’s office documents. The dog was valued at $5,500, according to an arrest warrant issued for Marshall on July 11.
Marshall stole the dog on July 3 while delivering packages, the sheriff’s office said. He then continued on his route.
“Investigators believe K-9 Tori died due to heat-related issues while she was traveling inside the FEDEX truck as temperatures were in the 90s,” said Sheriff Coats.
The dog’s body was found July 10 in Lillington, according to the sheriff’s office.
Marshall was jailed under a $50,000 secured bond. Court records show his bond has been posted.
Marshall was reached by phone Wednesday afternoon and declined to comment. He said his lawyer would provide comment for him, but the lawyer did not respond by publication.
FedEx declined to comment on whether Marshall was a full-time employee or contractor at the time of the alleged incident.
In a statement, the company said Marshall no longer works for FedEx.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the family on the loss of their beloved pet,” the statement said. “We understand the importance of pets in people’s lives and we are deeply sorry for the pain this has caused. The driver is no longer providing service on behalf of FedEx.”
