Phoenix police said human remains were found on South Mountain Saturday by a hiker who wandered off the trail.
Around 10 a.m., a South Mountain Park Ranger notified police that a hiker who had wandered off the Las Lomitas Trail near the north-central area of the park and found what appeared to be human remains, according to Sgt. Phil Krynsky.
Officers arrived at the scene and confirmed the remains were human, according to Krynsky.
Phoenix detectives were on scene processing evidence that would be transferred to the Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of death, according to Krynsky.
On Saturday morning, a TikTok user with the username @tattooed_traveler shared a video featuring a woman who claims to be the hiker who discovered the remains.
The unidentified woman was seen saying that police made her return to the scene to help rangers locate the remains, which she said consisted of a skull and other bones.
On Saturday night, the user made his account private, despite the Republic’s attempt to contact him.
