Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine grossed $205 million (£159.5 million) at the box office in its opening weekend in North America, securing a place in the top 10 openings of all time.
The movie based on comics, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackmanbroke the opening record for an R-rated film, where those under 17 must be accompanied by an adult.
The title had previously been held by the first Deadpool, which raked in $132m (£102.6m).
Combined with receipts from international markets, the film expects a worldwide opening of more than $438.3 million (£340 million).
In the best domestic opening weekends ever, Deadpool & Wolverine ranks eighth between The Avengers ($207.4 million) and Black Panther ($202 million), displacing Avengers: Age of Ultron ( $191.3 million) outside the top 10.
It’s the second straight hit for Disney after Pixar’s animated film Inside Out 2, which earned $154.2 million in its debut in June.
The movies have helped theater chains like AMC Entertainment, Cineworld and Cinemark that have struggled with a slim slate of movies in 2024.

The biggest domestic opening of all time still firmly belongs to Avengers: Endgame with $357.1 million.
It is followed by Spider-Man: No Way Home ($260.1 million), Avengers: Infinity War ($257.6 million), Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($247.9 million) and Star Wars : The Last Jedi ($220 million).
