A MAN suspected of fatally beating and raping a 23-year-old woman more than three decades ago has been identified after investigators compared his DNA to a discarded fork.

Albert Lauro Jr., 57 years old, was identified by Hawaii police as a possible suspect in the brutal murder of Dana Ireland, who was found beaten and partially clothed on a fishing trail on Hawaii Island on Christmas Eve 1991.

Hawaii police obtained Lauro Jr.’s DNA sample from a discarded fork and used it to match DNA evidence found at the crime scene where Ireland was attacked more than three decades ago.

Authorities visited Lauro Jr. at his home in Hawaiian Paradise Park on the island of Hawaii on July 19 to collect a DNA sample from him.

DNA from the cheek swab matched, but days later, Lauro Jr. was found dead in his home, police said.
