Suspected Long Island serial killer Rex Heuermann appeared in court for the first time since being charged with two additional murders.
The defense lawyer for Heuermann60, outlined a trial strategy as the accused mass murderer now faces six counts of murder.
Heuermann was arrested in July 2023 and charged with the murders of Melissa Barthelemy, 24, Megan Waterman, 22, Amber Lynn Costello, 27, and Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25 – also known as The Gilgo Four.
Prosecutors filed additional charges against Heuermann in June for his alleged involvement in the murders of Jessica Taylor, 20, and Sandra Costilla, 28.
Heuermann’s lawyer, Michael Brown, criticized the prosecution’s attempt to try to add the murders of Taylor and Costilla to the existing charge against the former architect.
“The two most recent ones were victims of the prosecution, specifically Castilla and Taylor. I know strategically why the prosecutor wanted to put them in, because the more the merrier, but they have nothing to do with the others,” Brown told reporters after the Tuesday’s hearing. .

“The Ministry of Defense is different, the way the murders were allegedly committed was different, the place where these bodies were deposited or left is completely different.
“So, as we know about the Gilgo Beach murders, these two had nothing to do with it.”
Brown said he plans to file a motion to separate the cases against his client, with the goal of separating the Gilgo Four’s charges from those of Taylor and Costilla.
“I know a lot of evidence and I want to present myself to a jury,” added the defense lawyer.
Heuermann has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
He will return to court on October 16. The trial date has not yet been set.
‘PLANNING DOCUMENT’
Investigators unearthed a disturbing “planning document” on a hard drive found in Heuermann’s Massapequa home in Long Islandwhich they claimed was a “methodical plan” for how he selected, killed and disposed of his victims.
