The headline in a report from Punchbowl News yesterday stood out: “It’s 2016 again after Trumpof Harris’ racist attacks on Harris.” A day earlier, a Fox News personality told viewers that there is “energy 2016“ around this year’s presidential race.

At first glance, the analysis seems convincing. In 2016, Donald Trump faced the first woman to lead a major party’s presidential ticket; he attacked her with ugly, sexist attacks; and eight years later, the Republican is recycling many of same words and phrases as he prepares to face the second woman to lead a major party presidential ticket.

Meanwhile, GOP lawmakers on Capitol Hill are pretending to have no idea what Trump is saying, which is also reminiscent of what the political world saw during his candidacy in 2016.

But to fully appreciate the scope of the former president’s ridiculous antics, perhaps it’s best to look even further back — not to 2016, but to 2010.

Trump spent much of the week Questioning Vice President Kamala Harris’ Racial and Ethnic Identity, suggesting that the country’s first black vice president may not be black enough by his standards. But how a report from the New York Times noted, the Republican candidate went even further yesterday.

Trump also amplified posts by Laura Loomer, a right-wing activist, who posted copies of Harris’ birth certificate and spread false accusations that Harris lied about her race.

Yes, the conspiracy theorist who helped pioneer the “birther” racist attacks against Barack Obama has decided, more than a decade later, to once again take an interest in other Birth certificate of the black candidate.

The Washington Post asked Loomer yesterday was the one who brought this line of attack to Trump’s attention. “Probably”, the right-wing personality he respondednoting that she shared the image with the former president.

Common sense suggests that Trump, given his ridiculous antics targeting Obama’s past, should avoid even passing references to birth certificates, but evidently he can’t help himself.
