A five-year-old boy died after a gust of wind blew up a bouncy castle while the children were inside at a baseball stadium.

Emergency services were called to Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf, in the US state of Maryland, on Friday after the bounce house was lifted “approximately 15 to 20 feet into the air.”

Some children inside the inflatable, which was set up to entertain children during Southern Maryland Blue Crabs games, fell to the floor of the baseball field before it could land.

Maryland State Police then took two children to Children’s National Hospital in Washington, DC.

A 5-year-old boy from La Plata was pronounced dead that same night.

The second child suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Witnesses told Sky partner NBC News that the bouncy castle had been secured with stakes driven into the ground.

A news release from the Charles County local government area said emergency responders already at the stadium for the game, along with baseball team coaches and several volunteers, began treating patients minutes after for the bouncy castle to take off.

Local Government Commissioner Chairman Reuben Collins added: “We extend our deepest empathy to children and their families during this difficult time.

“We thank our EMS team and Maryland State Police for their quick actions to ensure the children received immediate care.”
