As police negotiate, armed driver refuses to leave car in Bedford for several hours

A driver who police said tried to stop Sunday in Bedford because they claimed she was speeding on a highway refused for several hours to leave her car while officers tried to negotiate.

Bedford police attempted to stop the driver around 11:45 a.m. in the express lanes of State Highway 183.

The driver initially did not stop and called a dispatcher to tell the police department that she had a gun in the car, according to Bedford police. The driver finally stopped.

The driver, who was alone, refused to leave the car for several hours while officers tried to negotiate with her, according to Bedford police.

A SWAT team put gas in the car. The driver got out and turned himself in to the police.

The driver was taken to a hospital.
