A robot has completed a fully automated dental procedure on a human, a world first.
The technology presents a robotic arm – together with artificial intelligence and 3D images, to perform dental work.
US company Perceptive says its technology aims to be more precise and faster when completing procedures including fillings and crowns.
CEO and Founder Dr. Chris Ciriello said, “This medical advancement improves the precision and efficiency of dental procedures.”
The company has received $30m (£23.5m) in funding and is backed by dentist Edward Zuckerberg, father of Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg.
The firm claims that in the future, crown placement could be completed in just 15 minutes.
That compares to the current method that requires two-hour dental visits.
Part of the process begins with a 3D scan of the patient’s tooth and mouth, capturing images below the gum line.
However, the robotic device is still a work in progress.

It is not currently for sale in the US and is not authorized by the US regulator, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
But the manufacturers insist it is safe and claim their technology will “transform dentistry”.
