One American was found dead on the small island of Mathraki on Sunday, the last tourist who died or was reported missing in Greece this summer.

Another tourist found the man’s body on a beach near the ancient port of Mathraki, according to AFP. Mathraki is located near the most populated island of Corfu.

The American, who has not been identified, was reported missing on Thursday and was last seen alive in a tavern on Tuesday with two tourists who later left the island.

The tourist was on holiday in Mathraki and staying with a Greek-American man who contacted police after finding his house with the front door open, lights and air conditioning on, but no trace of his friend or his identity or travel documents.

The 1.3 square mile island has a population of only about 100 people and is heavily forested. Law enforcement authorities were called from Corfu because Mathraki has no coast guard or police station.

A coroner was traveling to Mathraki on Sunday to begin a preliminary investigation. Authorities said the body will be taken to Corfu for an autopsy, according to ABC News.

It is the third death of tourists on the Greek islands in a matter of weeks.

Last Sunday, British TV personality Dr. Michael Mosley was found dead on the island of Symi. A coroner found he had died four days earlier while hiking in hot conditions through rocky terrain.

A Dutch tourist was found dead on Saturday morning in Samos. The 74-year-old man was spotted by a fire department drone as he lay face down in a ravine about 330 meters from where he was last seen on Sunday as he struggled to walk in the heat.

Samos and Symi are located near the Turkish coast.

Authorities were still searching for three people reported missing Sunday on several Greek islands, including one American – retired Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy Albert Calibet, 59, of Hermosa Beach, Calif., who was reported missing after failing to having returned from a walk on the island of Amorgos.

“We’re sick to our stomachs knowing he’s out there somewhere,” said his girlfriend Debbie Leshane KABC.

She added that Calibet called her shortly before leaving for the hike, adding that they talked for about six minutes and that at around 9:20 a.m. local time on Tuesday, he sent her an image of the trailhead sign. That was the last time she heard from him.

Two French tourists were reported missing on the Aegean island of Sikinos on Friday. The island has fewer than 400 permanent residents, CBS News noted.

The tourists, two women aged 73 and 64, left their hotels to meet each other.
