Police arrested a Boise man suspected of starting a Fire in the foothills which burned a significant amount of land in the Polecat Gulch area, closing popular trails.

The Boise Police Department said the 51-year-old man was charged Monday morning with third-degree arson — meaning destroying personal property or forest land — in connection with a fire that started Friday night. fair at Polecat Gulch Trailhead, near North Collister Drive. .

The Polecat Fire burned 36 acres of land in the Foothills and threatened homes at the Collister end, according to police. Idaho Bureau of Land Management crews were able to bring the fire under control Saturday night.

“Thanks to the quick and coordinated response of first responders, the fire was stopped before it caused injuries or destruction to nearby homes,” police said.

Video helped police identify the suspect, who was booked into the Ada County Jail on Monday, according to police. The department said the investigation into this incident is ongoing and the suspect may face additional charges pending.

The Polecat Gulch to Collister Trailhead reopened Monday morning, according to Boise Parks and Recreation.
