With peak beach season ahead, access to one of Cape Cod’s most beautiful beaches is closed for safety reasons.
According to a alert issued in Truro city website“Beach access at Longnook Beach is temporarily closed while the path and adjacent dunes are assessed for safety. The City will continue to provide updates as they become available. The public is asked to avoid Longnook Beach until it reopens. “
Long Nook Beach is on the Atlantic Ocean side of town, and when the town’s access point is open, beachgoers must make a fairly difficult descent down a steep sandy path.
On Friday morning, the entrance to the beach was blocked and a “Beach Closed” sign was prominently posted. The parking lot was nearly empty and there was no one visible on the beach in any direction. A sign near the edge of a steep drop-off to the beach warned swimmers to stay away from the unstable area.
In an email to the Cape Cod Times on Friday, Truro City Manager Darrin Tangeman wrote, “We are working on a plan to make the situation safe, but the plan is being coordinated/evaluated prior to release.” .
