A dumpster fire on the grounds of Sinsheimer Elementary School that started during the Fourth of July fireworks display Thursday night was likely caused by stray fireworks.

The fire was reported at 9:11 p.m. to the San Luis Obispo Police Department, a guard commander told The Tribune.

Video of the fire was posted in X Thursday night by San Luis Obispo photographer Owen Main, who said the fire was started by something that was not part of the official San Luis Obispo Blues fireworks show.

“It was pretty crowded on the school field,” Main said. “As soon as the Blues fireworks started, someone shot one near the classrooms, on the lawn, and then there was another one who was shot on the asphalt there as well.”

Main said he saw people climbing on the roof of Sinsheimer Elementary, but was happy to see the building was not damaged.

The fire was extinguished by Cal Fire firefighters about seven minutes after it started, according to the Pulsepoint emergency services app.
