Watch triathletes race along the American River as the historic event returns to the Sacramento area

O Great American Triathlon celebrated its 49th ride on Saturday, with hundreds of people participating in the bike and boat race event along the American River.

The event, formerly known as the Great Eppie Race, began in 1974 and is considered the first modern triathlon.

The 38km course begins with a 9.3km run west of William Pond Recreation Area. Participants bike 20 km east of the Guy West Bridge to the Lower Sunrise Walkway and paddle downstream 10 km on the American River to River Bend Park.

Ben Lawry of Durham, North Carolina, finished with the fastest time: 1 hour, 50 minutes and 30 seconds. The fastest female finisher was Kristi Capello of Carmichael, who had a time of 2:08:33.
