Islamabad:

Pakistan’s former prime minister, arrested on Tuesday, called the arrest of former ISI chief Faiz Hameed an “internal issue” of the military and said the army’s action against the former general had no nothing to do with your party.

Hameed served as director general of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) from 2019 to 2021, when Khan was prime minister and was accused of meddling in political affairs at his request.

“Sahib Imran Khan said only this: ‘it is an internal matter of the army’ and that any action the army has taken has nothing to do with the PTI or Sahib Khan,” said Mr Khan’s legal representative, Intezar Panjutha.

Mr. Panjutha made these observations after a meeting between Mr. Khan and his senior lawyers at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.

Panjutha quoted Khan as saying that it was a purely military matter with no links to the PTI. He further clarified that there was no political connection between Mr Khan and Gen Faiz.

Khan also claimed that former army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa replaced General Faiz after making a deal with Nawaz Sharif, according to the lawyer.

Khan also suggested that if General Faiz’s arrest was related to the events of May 9, it would be an opportune time to form a judicial commission and bring to light the CCTV footage of the day, Panjutha noted.

He also stated that the former prime minister urged his followers to protest peacefully tonight in favor of freedom, highlighting the importance of taking to the streets across the country.

Panjutha also highlighted Mr Khan’s concerns regarding growing pressure on the Supreme Court, disillusionment among young people and deteriorating conditions in Pakistan, comparing them with those in Bangladesh.

He stated that Khan believed it was time for Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa to step back, highlighting that the PTI’s three seats were allegedly withdrawn the previous day.

Earlier, in an unprecedented move, Hameed was detained by the military authorities and court-martial cases were initiated against him, accused of corruption, abuse of authority and violation of the Pakistan Army Act.
