The Hezbollah group and Israel have regularly exchanged fire in southern Lebanon since October.

Beirut:

The Iranian-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah said on Tuesday it fired dozens of rockets into northern Israel in response to the deaths of two civilians in an attack blamed on Israel in southern Lebanon.

The Iranian-backed Hezbollah group and Israel have exchanged fire regularly in southern Lebanon since October.

Hezbollah fighters fired “dozens of Katyusha rockets” into northern Israel “as part of the response to attacks by the Israeli enemy against… civilian homes, specifically the horrific massacre in Hanin and the killing and wounding of civilians,” it said. the group in a statement. declaration.

Local rescue teams and official media said an Israeli attack on a house in Hanin, near the Israeli border, killed two members of the same family.

A civil defense source told AFP that “a 50-year-old woman and a 12-year-old girl were killed” in the attack, while several injured people from the same family were taken to hospital.

Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA) confirmed the deaths and said six other people were injured in the attack.

“Enemy warplanes carried out an attack on a two-story house, firing two air-to-ground missiles and completely destroying it,” the NNA said, adding that the building housed “a family that had not left… since the attacks Israelis.” started”.

Tens of thousands of people have been displaced on both sides of the Israel-Lebanon border since almost daily skirmishes began following the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, which triggered the war in Gaza.

But Hezbollah has intensified its rocket attacks on Israeli positions in recent days.

Earlier in the day, Hezbollah said it had launched drone strikes against bases in northern Israel in retaliation for the death of a fighter Israel described as “significant.”

The attack targeted Israel deeper than the border area the group normally attacks.

Hezbollah said it launched “a combined airstrike using decoys and explosive drones that targeted” two Israeli bases north of Acre, while Israel said it did not hit its targets.

On Tuesday morning, the Lebanese group said that one of its fighters was killed by Israeli fire, adding that he lived in the area where his vehicle was hit.

A source close to the Iran-backed group told AFP that an engineer working for the group’s air defense forces was killed by an Israeli drone strike while traveling in a vehicle.

The attack hit the Abu al-Aswad area, near the coastal city of Tyre, about 35 kilometers (22 miles) from the border, an AFP journalist said.

The fighter’s vehicle was completely burned.

Hezbollah also said in an overnight statement that another fighter was killed by Israel.

The Israeli army said it had killed “two key terrorists from the Hezbollah air unit” in night and morning raids.

The fighter killed on Tuesday was “heavily involved in the planning and execution of terrorist attacks against Israel”, he added.

Since October 7, at least 380 people have been killed in Lebanon, most of them Hezbollah fighters, but also 72 civilians, according to an AFP report.

Israel says 11 soldiers and eight civilians were killed on its side of the border.
