Beirut:
A local official in southern Lebanon said an Israeli attack on a village on Sunday killed a couple and their son, the latest deadly incident in the border region.
Israel and the Iranian-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah have been exchanging cross-border fire regularly since the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas’ unprecedented attack in October on southern Israel triggered the war in Gaza.
Fighting has intensified in recent weeks, with Israel attacking deeper into Lebanese territory, while Hezbollah has intensified its missile and drone attacks against military positions in northern Israel.
“The father, mother and little son were martyred,” according to the head of Mays al-Jabal municipality, Abdelmoneim Chukair.
Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency said the attack killed “three civilians” and injured several others.
Hezbollah said on Saturday night it had fired on military positions in northern Israel.
The Lebanese movement has repeatedly declared that only a ceasefire in Gaza will end its attacks on Israel.
The latest violence occurred when a Hamas delegation met with mediators in Egypt for talks on a possible truce agreement in the Gaza war.
Both the United States and France have made diplomatic efforts to calm tensions on the Lebanese-Israeli border.
In Lebanon, at least 389 people were killed in almost seven months of cross-border violence, most of them agents, but also more than 70 civilians, according to an AFP report.
The death toll includes at least 11 Hamas fighters.
Israel says 11 soldiers and nine civilians were killed on its side of the border.
Tens of thousands of people were displaced on both sides.
