London:
British actor Bernard Hill, best known for his supporting roles in the “Titanic” and “Lord of the Rings” trilogies, died on Sunday at age 79, his agent announced.
He played Captain Edward Smith in the 1997 Oscar-winning epic romance “Titanic” and gained worldwide recognition playing Théoden, King of Rohan, in two of the three “Lord of the Rings” films directed by Peter Jackson.
His agent Lou Coulson confirmed his death in the early hours of Sunday to British media.
Early in his career, Hill was in the acclaimed 1982 BBC drama “Boys from the Blackstuff,” which won several awards and is still praised as one of the best examples of its genre at the time.
He was set to return to television screens in the second season of the BBC’s contemporary drama “The Responder”, starring Martin Freeman, which begins airing in the UK later this Sunday.
