Pro-Palestine protesters gather outside Met Gala event, several arrested

These demonstrations come against the backdrop of broader student-led movements

New Delhi:

As stars and celebrities ascended the stairs of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art for the Met Gala event, another scene unfolded in the streets around the iconic venue. Thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters continued their protests against Israel’s actions in Gaza.

In Central Park, a group held cardboard signs with messages such as “No gala while bombs fall on Gaza” and “No celebration without liberation.” Along Fifth Avenue, a larger contingent raised Palestinian flags, chanting “Gaza! Gaza!” reverberating through the night air. Despite efforts by the New York Police Department, tensions rose as arrests were made nearby, drawing criticism from some for what they saw as a heavy-handed approach.

These demonstrations come against the backdrop of broader student-led movements, with universities such as Columbia University becoming centers of activism. Columbia University, at the forefront of student protests against the Gaza conflict, canceled its main graduation ceremony on Monday amid ongoing demonstrations that have rocked campuses across the country.

Colombia, where more than 100 pro-Palestinian protesters were arrested the previous week, cited security concerns over canceling its May 15 graduation ceremony, opting instead for smaller events. Despite this, some people angered by the decision launched an online petition, gathering more than 2,300 signatures as of Monday night.
